Daqi Painting, also known as lacquer painting

This page presents the same collection of artworks created between 2018 and 2020.

The artist skillfully employs the dense texture of Daqi,
using techniques such as layering and flowing to create
rich, dimensional surfaces. The interwoven, mottled
backgrounds hint at the traces of time and nature.

Fantao

Born in 1987, He is a member of the Shandong Artists Association and a representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage in Daqi art.

In 2016, he served on a UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and was awarded the United Nations Peace Honour Medal. Between 2018 and 2020, he created these paintings for that land. The landscapes depicted emerge from environments that may be hard to imagine. Beyond sighs of astonishment, Fantao often taught children and fellow peacekeepers to paint on these war-torn lands, allowing art to transcend language, ethnicity, and cultural barriers, bringing smiles to those around.

Fantao and children

After over 400 days and nights in this setting, Fantao took up the brush to create these early works, revealing that, were it not for the ravages of war, the land itself is truly beautiful.
